About Al Noor Training Centre for People of Determination

Al Noor Training Centre in Al Barsha 1 has supported children and young adults with developmental and intellectual disabilities since 1981, when it started with 8 children. It is now run by the Al Noor Rehabilitation & Welfare Association for People of Determination, approved as a public welfare association by the UAE Ministry of Community Development in 2020. The centre takes students aged 4 to 35 with multiple disabilities, intellectual disabilities or autism: Primary (4-8), Junior (9-14) and Senior (14-18) units, then Skills Training and Work Placement for 18-35. Each student's programme is built from trans-disciplinary assessment, and the association offers physical, occupational and speech therapy. Children aged 4 to 14 with a primary autism diagnosis start with PACT, a 10-month parent-and-child programme. The purpose-built campus has classrooms with specialist equipment, a gym, a multi-purpose auditorium, a swimming pool and a shaded outdoor playground. Students are welcome regardless of the severity of their disability, nationality or background; a People of Determination Card is needed to apply.

The activity

Occupational Therapy, explained

Al Noor is a specialist day centre for children and young adults with intellectual disabilities, multiple disabilities and autism, rather than a drop-in class. Students follow individualised programmes shaped by trans-disciplinary assessment, with physical, occupational and speech therapy alongside classroom learning, co-curricular activities and, for older students, vocational training and work placement. On site there's a swimming pool, gym, auditorium and shaded playground. For younger children with autism, the way in is PACT, a 10-month programme where a parent or caregiver attends the daily sessions with the child. It suits families looking for structured, long-term support: entry is by assessment and a People of Determination Card, not by booking a class.

Who it's for

Ages 4-35 with multiple disabilities, intellectual disabilities or autism, holding a People of Determination (disability) card from the Ministry of Community Development. Units: Primary 4-8, Junior 9-14, Senior 14-18, then Skills Training/Work Placement 18-35. The centre welcomes students regardless of the severity of their disability, nationality or socio-economic background. Children aged 4-14 with a primary diagnosis of autism must first complete the PACT (Parent and Child Training) programme.

What to expect

Start by asking for a parent tour and meeting - the centre runs these for families who want to know more. To apply you'll need a People of Determination Card, plus neurological, paediatric, ophthalmological, audiological and psychological assessments, a Sensory Profile, visual perceptual tests, a communication skills assessment and a medical report stating the diagnosis. Documents include residence visas, passports, Emirates ID, birth certificate and immunisation card. For a child under 14 with autism, the first step is PACT: 10 months of daily sessions, about 300 hours, with a parent or caregiver attending throughout. There is no trial class; ask the provider about places and start dates.
