The activity

Jiu-Jitsu, explained

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) is a grappling martial art built on technique and leverage rather than strikes, so a smaller child can learn to control a bigger partner through positioning, escapes and holds. Kids' classes teach the same fundamentals as the adult game - takedowns, guard work and escapes - in a more playful format, building discipline, confidence, coordination and fitness along the way. It can be trained in a Gi (the traditional jacket) or No-Gi (rash guard and shorts). Starting ages vary from academy to academy, and most use belts or stripes so children can see their progress over months and years.

Who it's for

Children, in a dedicated Kids Class that is separate from the adult classes. The website does not publish an age range or level for the Kids Class - ask the provider which ages it takes.

What to expect

The Kids Class is a 60-minute session, listed on the website's timetable on Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 5PM to 6PM. The first class is free: the booking page says "Select a class you would like to attend - first class is a free trial!", and you book through the website. Sessions cover the fundamentals of the 10th Planet (No-Gi) and Jean Jacques (Gi) systems in a fun, engaging format. The website does not say what to wear or bring, or who coaches the kids, so ask the provider when you book the trial.
