About YU Taekwondo

YU Taekwondo is the Dubai studio of an Austrian taekwondo academy, at Shop 6 in the Sheikh Rashid Building on Sheikh Zayed Road (Trade Center 1). Classes are banded by age: toddlers (3-5), children (6-12) and teenagers (12-20), alongside adult, senior, ladies-only and family sessions where parents train with their kids. The toddler programme uses play and small-group exercises to build balance, coordination and concentration while children learn their first kicks. The children's course mixes traditional taekwondo with acrobatics, self-defence, children's fitness and free fighting. Toddlers train on weekday afternoons, kids and teens in the early evening and on weekend mornings, and belt examination days run through the year. The system was founded in Vienna in 2003 by sports scientist and Grandmaster Dr Andreas Held and now has over 27 locations, 16 of them in Vienna. Private 1:1 sessions are available too, and new families can book a free trial class with no commitment.

The activity

Martial Arts, explained

Taekwondo is a Korean martial art built around kicking techniques, patterns (forms) and sparring, taught through a belt-grading system that gives children clear, visible progress markers. For younger kids, classes usually focus on motor skills, coordination, concentration and listening, moving into more technical kicking, blocking and self-defence work as they grow. Parents often choose it for the structure and discipline it builds as much as the physical side. Many academies take children from about age 3, with age-banded classes so toddlers, kids and teens train separately, and regular belt exams mark each step forward.

Who it's for

Toddlers (3-5), children (6-12) and teenagers (12-20) each have their own classes, plus family sessions where parents train alongside their children, and adult, senior and ladies-only classes. Beginners and advanced students are both catered for.

What to expect

Start with a free trial class, booked through the academy's online registration form, with no commitment. The academy says the trial lets you see its training methods and the atmosphere in the dojang, with trainers guiding you through the basics and answering your questions. After the trial, the coaching team talks you through a training plan and how often to come. Toddler sessions last 45 minutes (4-4:45PM on weekdays) and kids' classes an hour. Members train in the school's martial arts suit; the site doesn't say what to wear to the trial itself, so ask the provider.
