The activity

Padel, explained

Padel is a racket sport played mostly in doubles on an enclosed court smaller than a tennis court, with glass and mesh walls that stay in play. Players use a solid, stringless bat and a lower-bounce ball, so beginners can rally sooner than in tennis and games stay fast and sociable. Coaching usually covers grip, volleys, serving, positioning and how to play the ball off the walls. Because the court is compact and points are short, children get plenty of ball contact in each session. It builds hand-eye coordination, footwork, quick decisions and teamwork, and it is easy to play as a family once the basics click.

Who it's for

Children and teenagers aged 6 to 17, through what the academy's website calls its Junior Academy: age-based learning programmes for all skill levels. Adults are catered for separately with coaching, private and group lessons. Ask the provider which venue runs junior sessions and which group suits your child.

What to expect

The academy describes its junior sessions as age-based coaching with confidence-building activities, and its private option as one-to-one lessons with a coach; semi-private sessions take a maximum of two players. The website does not describe a first session, a trial or taster policy, or whether rackets and balls are provided, and it does not say where or when junior groups meet, so ask about each of these when you message. Joining is by enquiry: the Junior Academy button on the site goes to the contact page, and the site's WhatsApp link is the quickest route for a reply.
