About Urban Boxer DXB

Urban Boxer is a boxing gym in The Grandstand at Dubai Autodrome, Motor City, built around what it calls Soviet-style boxing taught by Uzbek coaches. The focus is technique: footwork, defence, timing and movement, taking members from complete beginners to competitive fighters. Children have their own classes three afternoons a week, at 4.30pm on Mondays and Wednesdays (technique) and Thursdays (conditioning), and teens train six days a week, from technique and bagwork to supervised sparring. The kids' classes are led by Abdullah, who started boxing from zero at Urban Boxer three years ago and is now a member of the UAE National Boxing Team. The wider team includes head coach Jakhongir, a Master of Sport and national champion in Uzbekistan, and Mukhammad, a former coach of the Uzbekistan National Team. A kids' membership with unlimited kids' classes is AED 499 a month, with no contract, and you can book a free trial through the website or WhatsApp.

The activity

Boxing, explained

Boxing for children is about skill, not fighting. Kids learn a proper stance, footwork, how to throw a straight punch and a hook, and how to block, slip and move away. Much of a class is drills: skipping, shadow boxing, hitting pads held by a coach and working on the heavy bag, with circuits for fitness. Contact comes later, in controlled, supervised sparring with head guards. Along the way children build coordination, stamina, quick reactions and a good deal of self-control and confidence, because every drill rewards listening and discipline. Starting ages and age groups vary from club to club, so ask before you book.

Who it's for

Children and teenagers of any level, from complete beginners upwards; there are separate Kids and Teens classes, and the club's terms say kids and teens must join the class for their age group. The website does not give the age range for each group, so ask the provider which class suits your child. Bookings for under-18s should be made or authorised by a parent or guardian. Adults have their own classes and a Sunday bootcamp; 1-on-1 and duo personal training is also offered, so ask whether it is available for children.

What to expect

Start with a free trial: pick "Kids Boxing" or "Teenagers Boxing" on the booking form on the website, or message the gym on WhatsApp. Trials must be booked in advance and may be limited to one per person. Kids' Monday and Wednesday classes are technique sessions and Thursday is conditioning; teens' weeks also include technical sparring, sparring and Saturday bagwork, with every sparring round supervised by a coach. Tell the coaches about any injury or condition before your child trains. The website does not list what kit to bring, so ask the provider about gloves and wraps.
