About United Kickboxing Academy - Al Quoz

United Kickboxing Academy (UKA) teaches kickboxing at Just Play Sports Complex on 15A Street, Al Quoz, and welcomes children from 4 years old. Its Point Fighting programme is for children aged 4-17 and young adults, while the Full Contact programme starts at 14. Juniors move through a staged pathway: Active Start, a playful, confidence-building foundation, then Foundation, Development Team and Comp Squad for those aiming at competition. Progress runs through a White-to-Black belt system, with gradings held in small groups or privately when coaches judge a child ready. The team page lists founder Shifu Yan Kun, a former Team GB Head Coach for Chinese Kickboxing, alongside head coaches for point fighting and full contact. There are no trial lessons: instead the academy books a free private assessment and then recommends a programme and weekly training load. Classes average around 10 students per coach, and the academy's motto is "You don't need to be great to start, but you do need to start to be great". It holds 5.0 on Google from 18 reviews.

The activity

Martial Arts, explained

Kickboxing mixes punches and kicks from boxing and the martial arts with footwork, defence and fitness. For children it usually starts with technique, coordination and pad work, and contact is added gradually once a child shows control. Many clubs follow a belt system, so kids work towards clear grading milestones. Competitive kickboxing has several formats, from point fighting, where bouts pause after each clean scoring technique, to continuous light-contact and full-contact styles. Beyond fitness, parents often choose it for discipline, focus, respect and confidence. Some Dubai academies take children from around four years old in dedicated junior groups.

Who it's for

Children from 4 years old, placed by age, ability and potential rather than age alone. The Point Fighting programme is for ages 4-17 and young adults; the Full Contact programme is for ages 14 to adults. Beginners, students working towards black belt and competitive athletes are all catered for.

What to expect

There are no trial lessons. Instead a coach runs a free private assessment with age-appropriate movement, coordination and basic technique drills, then proposes a programme and a weekly training load. For the assessment your child needs comfortable sportswear and water; after enrolling, the UKA uniform is mandatory, and gloves, shin guards and a mouthguard are added when the coach says contact work can begin. Sessions run about 60 minutes. Sparring is introduced gradually, only once a child shows technique, control and composure. Arrive 10 minutes early: children more than 10 minutes late may miss the warm-up.
