The activity

Abacus, explained

Abacus mental arithmetic teaches children to calculate with beads on a small frame, then to picture the abacus in their head and do the same sums without it. Classes mix bead work, flash cards, listening drills and timed written sums, so children practise number sense, concentration, memory and speed together. It is a graded programme: children move up level by level over months, starting with addition and subtraction before multiplication, division and decimals. At this centre, the UCMAS course is for children aged 4 to 13, with a Junior stream for under-7s and a Basic stream for over-7s.

Who it's for

Children aged 4 to 13 for UCMAS abacus, as the centre's UCMAS page states, split into a Junior stream (below 7 years) and a Basic stream (above 7 years). The website, written around 2016, also lists robotics for ages 4 to 13, with RoboRobo Robo Kits for children 8 and up; confirm it still runs.

What to expect

The UCMAS page says the first six months are spent getting to know the abacus: how the beads and rods show numbers, so each bead pattern becomes a picture in the child's mind. Lessons use flash cards to build that picture memory, oral drills for listening, and speed writing for quick written sums. Once children can recall the bead pictures, they start doing sums mentally, first with the abacus and later without it. In the Junior stream each level lasts three months. The website's robotics page describes children working with a buddy to plan, build and program a robot; ask whether robotics still runs. Ask the provider about a trial class and placement.
