Art Kala Fine Arts is a KHDA-approved drawing and painting institute in Al Qusais Industrial Area 1, running since 2016. Regular classes are for age 5 and up, in 2-hour sessions grouped into age- and skill-based batches, covering drawing, watercolour, acrylic and oil painting, with continuous assessments and a certificate on completion. Beyond the weekly classes, the studio runs Winter, Spring and Summer camps for kids and teens (drawing, watercolour, acrylic and mixed media), 4-hour hands-on workshops for kids and adults with all materials provided, and an annual student exhibition where students show their work to family and friends. Adults learn here too, so it suits a family where a parent fancies picking up a brush as well. The website offers a free trial class, and the studio is rated 4.8 on Google from 94 reviews.

The activity

Art, explained

Drawing and painting classes teach children to look closely and put what they see on paper. Kids start with line work, shading, perspective and composition, then move on to colour with media such as watercolour, acrylic, oil pastels and, later, oil paint. Along the way they build fine motor control, patience and focus, and learn that a picture improves with practice rather than coming out 'right' first time. Ongoing weekly classes let technique grow steadily, while holiday camps and one-off workshops give a more intensive taste. Many children start around age 5, once they can hold a pencil or brush comfortably and follow a simple step-by-step demonstration.

Who it's for

Children from age 5, teens and adults, beginners to advanced. Regular classes are grouped into age- and skill-based batches; the Drawing Fundamentals Course is described as suitable for kids, teens and beginners, and camps are for kids and teens aged 5+.

What to expect

Start with a free trial class, booked through the website, WhatsApp or phone. Regular classes last 2 hours and are taught in batches by age and skill level, working through drawing, watercolour, acrylic and oil painting with continuous assessments along the way. Workshops run for 4 hours with all materials provided, and children finish and take home a complete artwork. The website doesn't say whether materials are included in regular classes or what to bring, so ask the studio when you book the trial.
