The Piano Academy - Golden Mile is a music school on Palm Jumeirah, one of the academy's two Dubai branches (the other is in Jumeirah Park). Piano is the main focus, taught one on one to children, teens and adults, with guitar, vocal and ukulele classes also on the academy's menu. Children can start piano from age 4 and ukulele from age 5. Piano lessons come in 30-, 45- and 60-minute slots; the academy suggests 30 minutes for beginners and younger children. Styles range from classical, with a path towards ABRSM and Trinity exams and mock exams, to pop, rock, jazz and blues. Students also get recitals and concerts to perform in. New students can book an assessment lesson to meet a teacher before choosing a programme, and lessons are sold in packages of at least four. It suits families who want a child working towards a formal grade as well as those who simply want a weekly lesson close to home on the Palm.

The activity

Piano, explained

Piano lessons teach a child to read music, coordinate both hands and build a feel for rhythm and pitch, usually one on one with a teacher. Beginners start with simple pieces, scales and listening games, then build towards more demanding repertoire and, for families who want it, graded exams such as ABRSM or Trinity. It suits children who enjoy a focused activity and like seeing steady progress from week to week. Regular practice at home on a piano or keyboard makes a big difference. Many schools take children from around four or five, once they can sit and follow a teacher for a short lesson.

Who it's for

Piano from age 4 through teens and adults, complete beginners to advanced; ukulele from age 5; guitar and vocal lessons for children, teens and adults. No previous musical experience needed.

What to expect

New students can book an assessment lesson to meet a teacher, see the teaching approach and get advice on the right programme. Piano lessons are one on one, in 30-, 45- or 60-minute slots; 30 minutes is suggested for beginners and younger children, and younger pupils start with rhythm, listening and simple pieces. The site suggests one or two lessons a week, so ask what suits your child. You don't need a piano at home to start, though a piano or weighted keyboard is recommended for practice. Whether the assessment lesson is free - ask the provider.
