The activity

Piano, explained

Piano lessons teach a child to read music, coordinate both hands, and build technique through scales, pieces and exercises, usually with a teacher adjusting the pace to the child. Many piano schools also prepare students for graded exams with bodies like Trinity College London or ABRSM, giving a structured way to track progress year on year. Alongside playing, children often pick up music theory - rhythm, harmony and notation. It suits complete beginners through to advancing players, builds fine motor skills, focus and a musical ear, and many studios take children from around age four or five.

Who it's for

Children from 4 years old through to adults of any age, from complete beginners to advancing pianists. Students preparing for ABRSM or Trinity College London piano exams, and families who prefer home or online lessons.
