About The Forge Gym x Roger Gracie Dubai Academy

The Forge Gym x Roger Gracie Dubai Academy is a Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu club on the roof floor of API Business Suites, 321 Sheikh Zayed Road, Al Barsha First, next to Al Zahra Hospital. The club says its Jiu-Jitsu follows the original Roger Gracie Academy curriculum, and its timetable also includes No-Gi and Muay Thai classes. Its kids' programme, Forge Your Future, starts at age 4. The live timetable splits children into Jiu-Jitsu classes for ages 4-6, 7-10 and teens 11-15, with the 7-10s grouped by level, from beginners to intermediate and advanced. A kids' competition class is open only to children the coaches select. The 4-6s train every weekday afternoon, the 7-10s on weekdays plus a Saturday morning class, and teens three evenings a week. New children can't just walk in: book a trial at least 24 hours ahead. The club describes the programme as building discipline, focus, confidence and teamwork, and helping children stand up to bullies. It's rated 4.9 on Google from 95 reviews, 91 of them five stars.

The activity

Martial Arts, explained

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) is a grappling martial art. Instead of punching or kicking, children learn to bring a partner to the mat, hold a position and escape from underneath, using leverage and timing rather than size or strength. A class usually mixes a warm-up, techniques drilled with a partner, and games or controlled sparring. Kids train in a gi, a heavy cotton kimono, and move up through stripes and coloured belts as they improve. It builds coordination, body awareness, problem-solving and calm under pressure, and clubs often talk about it in terms of confidence and handling bullying. At this club, kids' classes start at age 4.

Who it's for

Children from age 4, in Jiu-Jitsu groups for ages 4-6, 7-10 and teens 11-15. The 7-10s are split by level: a beginners' class (white belts with 1-2 stripes), an intermediate and advanced class (3 or more stripes, or grey-and-white belt and above), and a Saturday class for beginners and intermediates. Complete beginners are welcome: 4-6s do an intro class first, and new teens do a short intro with the coach. The kids' competition class is only for children the coaches pick from the regular classes.
