About The Ballet Centre

The Ballet Centre is a KHDA-approved dance, music and taekwondo school at one centre in Jumeirah, founded by Terry Dean in 1985. Ballet is taught on the RAD (Royal Academy of Dance) syllabus, with tap and modern on the ISTD syllabus, and the school says it welcomes more than 800 students each week with 15 specialist teachers. Ballet runs from Prep Ballet (3 to 4 years) through RAD grades to vocational and pointe classes, mostly on Wednesdays, Thursdays, Saturdays and Sundays. Taekwondo follows the ITF syllabus through Babies, Beginner, Intermediate, Advanced and Adult levels. Music lessons are one to one - piano, keyboard, violin, guitar, flute and more - with Trinity, ABRSM and MTB exams as an option; group music, choir and orchestra times are still to be announced. New students get a free trial class, arranged by WhatsApp or phone.

The activity

Ballet, explained

Ballet builds posture, flexibility, coordination and musicality through graded, structured technique - starting with basic positions and simple movement games for very young children and progressing to formal exam syllabuses (like RAD) as they get older. Classes are usually organised by grade rather than strict age, so children move up as their technique develops rather than automatically each year. It suits children who enjoy following structure and repetition, and many schools also offer complementary styles like tap or modern alongside ballet for variety.

Who it's for

Children from age 3. Ballet starts with Prep Ballet (3 to 4 years) and runs through RAD grades to vocational levels and pointe (by invitation); taekwondo runs from Babies Taekwondo (3 to 4 years) through Beginner (5 to 8), Intermediate (9 and above) and Advanced, up to an adult class. Music runs from age 3 to young adults (flute from age 8). For ballet and taekwondo, instructors place each student by age and experience.

What to expect

The first class is free, with no obligation to continue. Trials are arranged by WhatsApp or phone rather than online: send the student's name, age and the class they are interested in, and the team suggests a level, checks availability and confirms a day and time. Ballet students wear a leotard, tights and ballet slippers; for music, casual clothing is fine but flip-flops are not allowed in the studios. Parents are usually not allowed inside the classroom, but there are designated observation days. If the trial goes well, you can enrol at the front desk, by phone or on WhatsApp.
