The activity

Basketball, explained

Basketball is a fast team game that suits children who like to run, jump and be part of a squad. Young beginners start with ball-handling, dribbling with both hands, simple passing and shooting at lower hoops, mostly through games that keep everyone moving. As children get older, sessions add footwork, defence, set plays and proper matchplay, so they learn to read the game and make quick decisions. Along the way it builds coordination, fitness, spatial awareness and the confidence to talk to teammates. Many children start in a play-based group from pre-school age and move into skills and team sessions once they are at school.

Who it's for

Boys and girls aged 2.5-18, in four stages: 2.5-4.5 ('Move, play, discover'), 5-7 ('Build the basics'), 8-11 ('Grow the game') and 12-18 ('Find the next level'), with beginner, intermediate and advanced levels. At GEMS Winchester School the listed programmes are the Girls Only Academy (ages 7-18), ECA after-school sessions and the School Holiday Program. The Inclusion Sports Academy for Children of Determination is listed at Abu Dhabi and Al Ain venues, not in Dubai.

What to expect

The website invites parents to book a trial session. The booking form asks for your child's age, preferred programme, location (Dubai, Abu Dhabi or Al Ain) and current level - beginner, intermediate, advanced or 'not sure' - but the site says its forms don't send details yet, so call, WhatsApp or email the booking team instead. What a trial involves, what it costs and what kit to bring aren't published, so ask the booking team. Session days and times at GEMS Winchester School aren't published either, and TSS asks families to confirm session details before travelling.
