The activity

Football, explained

Football coaching for kids builds ball control, teamwork and match awareness through drills and small-sided games. The youngest groups focus on coordination and simply enjoying the ball; as children get older, sessions add passing patterns, positions and the rules of the game, and keen players can move into selection squads and league matches. Most academies run weekly sessions in age groups, with the option to train more than once a week and to play weekend fixtures against other teams once a child is ready. Complete beginners are usually welcome, and groups are split by age so children train with others at a similar stage.

Who it's for

Boys and girls, from complete beginners to experienced players; the academy says coaches assess new players when they start and suggest a group. At GEMS Founders School Al Barsha the timetabled groups are 4-6, 4-11, 5-8, 5-11, 8-11, 12-14, 13-15 and 13-16, a girls' group for 8-16, goalkeeping groups for 8-12 and 13-15, and Under 8, Under 10 and Under 12 selection squads.

What to expect

Book a trial through the academy's online booking form: the homepage offers a free trial class, and the FAQ asks families to contact the academy about the current trial process, so confirm your child's group when you book. The Al Barsha page says you can also register on site by arriving 15 minutes before the first session, that training follows a five-week development cycle, and that parents get player progress tracking and regular coach feedback. Sessions at this venue last 60 or 90 minutes depending on the group. Official training and match kit is available, and whether it is included depends on the package. What to bring on day one: ask the provider.
