The activity

Basketball, explained

Basketball is a fast team sport where children learn to dribble, pass, shoot and move without the ball, and to make quick decisions alongside teammates. A typical kids' session mixes a warm-up and skill drills (footwork, ball-handling, shooting form) with small games, so children are moving and touching the ball rather than waiting in line. It builds balance, coordination, speed and fitness, and just as much teamwork, communication and confidence under pressure. Younger groups keep things simple and playful; older players move on to tactics, defence and match play. Star Basketball Academy takes children from 5 years old.

Who it's for

Boys and girls from 5 years old, beginners and experienced players. At Jumeira Baccalaureate School the groups are 5-8, 9-12 and 13-17 years; the 5-8 group trains on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Sundays only. There is no female coach at present.

What to expect

Book a free trial through the academy's online booking form and pick your venue; the form asks for your child's date of birth, a passport-size photo and any allergies or medical conditions. At Jumeira Baccalaureate School sessions run 60 minutes, or 75 minutes for the Monday and Wednesday groups, with a warm-up, skills practice and game situations; ask your venue about its session length. Beginners start with dribbling, passing and shooting. Bring sports clothing, basketball shoes and a water bottle. If you carry on, you choose a 4, 20 or 40-week package and sessions per week; registration and uniform fees appear in the online price calculator before you pay. Pick a branch on this page to see its address.
