Basketball, explained

Basketball is a fast team game where each side tries to score by shooting a ball through a raised hoop. Children usually start with the basics: dribbling with either hand, passing, catching, footwork and shooting at a lowered hoop with a smaller ball. As they grow, drills turn into small-sided games and then full matches with simple team plays. It builds coordination, speed, stamina and quick decisions, and because everyone attacks and defends, it teaches teamwork and communication. Many academies take children from early primary-school age, often grouped by age and level.

Who it's for

Boys and girls aged 4 to 18, according to the academy's October 2026 post for its South View School (Remraam) and Town Square branches. Its Instagram bio gives 4 to 16, so if your child is an older teenager, ask which group they would join at Remraam. For players who want to compete, the academy runs girls' teams (U13, U15, U17) and boys' teams from U9 to U20, which all had match days in Dubai in October 2026.

What to expect

The first step is a free trial session. You can book it through the form on the academy's website, where you can choose Remraam as your location, or call or WhatsApp +971 52 722 2874 with any questions first. Session length, group size and the kit list are not published, so ask the academy what your child should wear and bring, which entrance to use at South View School and whether parents can stay and watch. The Google listing notes a wheelchair-accessible entrance and car park. If your child is keen to play matches, ask how players join the girls' and boys' competitive teams.
