About Sportex artistic swimming

Sportex Artistic Swimming is a private artistic (synchronised) swimming academy that trains in Dubai at Al Wasl Club, with a second group in Abu Dhabi. The academy says it launched in 2017 and describes itself as the first professional artistic swimming academy in the UAE. Its website welcomes girls from 5 years and above. New swimmers start in a Recreational Program: one-hour sessions that mix dry-land work and pool time, covering basic skills, simple figures and pieces of a routine. Girls who want to compete move up to the Competitive Program, which trains three times a week, and experienced swimmers can join the Pro-Competitive Program for national and international competition. There is also a Figures Program that follows Canadian Artistic Swimming's Star Program, with levels from Stars 1-10 up to Superstar 1-7. The website lists a head coach it describes as an Olympic-level artistic swimming coach and Egyptian national team coach. Fees are not published, so message the academy to ask.

The activity

Artistic Swimming, explained

Artistic swimming, once called synchronised swimming, mixes swimming, gymnastics and dance, performed in the water to music. Swimmers learn sculling (small hand movements that keep them afloat and moving), how to hold shapes upside down, and 'figures', set positions that are judged on their own. They then put these together into routines as a solo, duet, trio or team. Training usually includes dry-land work on flexibility and strength as well as pool time. It builds breath control, core strength, flexibility, rhythm and teamwork. Children need to be comfortable swimming before they start, and at Sportex girls can start from 5.

Who it's for

Girls from 5 years and above, according to the academy's website. Swimmers should have basic swimming knowledge before starting. The Recreational Program is for new swimmers; the Competitive Program is for swimmers who have come through it and want to compete; the Pro-Competitive Program is for experienced competitive swimmers in age groups 11-12, 13-15 and 16-18. The academy says the Stars figures programme it follows suits a variety of ages and abilities, including swimmers with disabilities.

What to expect

A Recreational Program session lasts one hour and is split between dry land and the water. Swimmers are introduced to basic skills, simple figures and routine components, plus exercises for strength, coordination and flexibility, and they get the chance to learn a routine. The academy's kit list is a comfortable athletic-cut swimsuit, goggles, a swim cap and a nose clip, and it says swimmers should already have basic swimming knowledge. Whether a trial class is offered, and the fees, are not on the website: ask the provider.
