About Ski Dubai

Ski Dubai is an indoor snow centre on the ground floor of Mall of the Emirates, run by Majid Al Futtaim. The Snow Park is kept at -4°C. It has a sliding hill, a tubing run, a zorb ball, snow bumper cars, a bobsled, a climbing wall and a snow plough playground, plus a chairlift and the Mountain Thriller ride. King and Gentoo penguins walk through the park in the Penguin March at 2, 4, 6 and 8 PM. The colony began in January 2012 with 20 birds and now has more than 40. Beyond the Snow Park there are ski and snowboard slopes, a zipline called the Snow Bullet, and a Ski Academy with group, private and multi-week lessons for children from age 3. Every pass includes clothing rental. Children get a jumpsuit, boots and socks, and helmets are compulsory for under-13s. Children under 2 are not allowed in, and under-14s must be with an adult aged 16 or over.

The activity

Skiing, explained

Ski Dubai is an indoor snow centre kept at about -4°C, with real snow all year. Families come for two things. One is the Snow Park, where children slide down a sliding hill, go tubing, climb, ride bumper cars, a bobsled and a giant zorb ball, and watch the daily Penguin March. The other is the slope, where children learn to ski or snowboard with an instructor. Skiing builds balance, leg strength and confidence. At Ski Dubai children can start ski lessons from age 3 and snowboard lessons from age 8. The first step is a 60-minute Discovery lesson on how to slide, stop and use the gear.

Who it's for

Families with children aged 2 and up. Snow Park passes are for age 2+, children under 2 are not allowed inside, and children under 14 must be with an adult aged 16 or over. Some rides have height limits: 90 cm for the sliding hill and tubing (with an adult), 100 cm for the bobsled, and 125 cm for the climbing wall, zorb ball and bumper cars. Ski lessons start at 3 and are split into Child (3-6), Junior (7-13) and Adult (14+). Snowboard lessons start at 8. The open slope is for skiers and snowboarders at Intermediate Level 2 or above.

What to expect

For a first visit most families buy a Snow Park pass. You collect your snow clothing and a locker, then spend the day on the rides and catch a Penguin March. Bring your own gloves or buy a pass that includes them. Discovery lessons come without gloves. For a child who wants to ski, the first step is a 60-minute Discovery lesson. It covers how to slide, stop and use the gear, and all equipment is included. Children in Discovery lessons stay with their instructors the whole time, so parents do not need to supervise. After each lesson the instructor decides which level your child books next. Check in at Ski School 40 minutes before a lesson.
