About Shaolin Kung Fu Martial Arts Club
Shaolin Kung Fu Martial Arts Club teaches traditional Chinese kung fu and Tai Chi at two Dubai venues: its Arjan studio at The Light Commercial Tower and a sports hall at Dubai British School in Emirates Hills. The curriculum covers classical kung fu forms, practical self-defence, joint manipulation and throws, traditional animal styles and Tai Chi. The club is led by Chief Master Hang, from the Shaolin Temple in China, who holds a Shaolin Kung Fu 7th Dan black belt and a Chinese Martial Art International 6th Dan black belt and has more than 16 years of kung fu and Tai Chi teaching experience. At Arjan, kids' kung fu runs every day except Saturday in two age groups, 4-8 and 8-12, with a Saturday class for parents and children together and a somersault class (flips and jump kicks) for ages 4-12. Dubai British School has its own, shorter kids' timetable on Tuesdays and Fridays. Fees are published: a three-month package of kids' kung fu once a week is 1,050 AED. A free trial class is offered, so call to book.
The activity
Martial Arts, explained
Kung fu is a family of traditional Chinese martial arts covering striking, forms (choreographed movement sequences), self-defence, joint locks, throws and animal-style techniques, often taught alongside Tai Chi for balance and control. For children it builds focus, discipline, coordination and confidence as much as fighting skill, with progress usually marked by coloured belts or sashes as forms and techniques are learned. Good schools group children by age and level rather than putting beginners in with advanced students. Many clubs take children from around four or five, starting with basic stances, kicks and short forms before moving on to longer routines, partner drills and, later, acrobatic skills.
Who it's for
Boys and girls from age 4, beginners to advanced. At Arjan, kids' kung fu is split into two groups: 4-8 years and 8-12 years. The somersault class at Arjan is for ages 4-12, and there is a Family Kung Fu class there for parents with kids. Tai Chi and adult kung fu classes run separately for grown-ups. The club's timetable does not give age groups for the Dubai British School classes, so ask which one suits your child.
What to expect
Start with the free trial class: the club asks you to call to book it (+971 50 573 5482). At Arjan, group kids' classes last an hour: 4:30-5:30 PM for ages 4-8 and 5:30-6:30 PM for ages 8-12, every day except Saturday. At Dubai British School the kids' classes run on Tuesday and Friday evenings, and the club says to ask whether they are open to children from other schools. Progress is marked by belts from white to black, with a grading and certificate fee for each belt from yellow upwards. Ask the club what your child should wear to the first class and whether a uniform is needed.
