About ClearMinds Center

ClearMinds Center for Emotional Health is a psychology clinic in HDS Business Centre, Cluster M, JLT. Alongside its adult and couples work, it runs a children's service: play therapy for younger children, individual therapy for teenagers, parent training sessions, and assessments for learning and development, including psychoeducational, dyslexia, dyscalculia, dysgraphia, ADHD and autism assessments. Its teen page says the team sees young people from 3 to 18. The play therapy room is equipped with toys chosen so a child can "talk" to the therapist through play and stories, and the clinic lists anxiety, behaviour, school struggles, ADHD, learning difficulties, trauma and adjusting to big changes such as divorce or relocation among the issues it helps with. Four psychologists are listed on the child page, including Sara Caroppo, who is trained in play therapy, and Dr Nayla Daou, a clinical psychologist and play therapist. This is clinical therapy by appointment, not a drop-in class: it starts with a meeting with parents.

The activity

Creative & Play Therapy, explained

Play therapy is a way for children to work through feelings they can't yet put into words. Instead of sitting and talking, a child plays with carefully chosen toys, figures and stories while a trained therapist watches, joins in and gently reflects back what comes up. Worries, anger, a divorce, a move or a loss often show up in the play long before a child can explain them. Over a series of sessions, children build confidence, learn ways to calm big feelings and find their own ways through problems. It is usually offered to younger children, with older children and teenagers more often seen for talking therapy. Parents are normally part of the process through separate meetings with the therapist.

Who it's for

Children and teenagers aged 3 to 18, and their parents. Younger children are seen mainly through play therapy; teenagers are usually seen individually, with parents involved separately. The clinic lists anxiety, behavioural problems, school struggles, ADHD, learning difficulties, autism spectrum, trauma, depression and adjustment to life changes among the issues it works with. Its site says you don't need a crisis to come: many families seek therapy as a proactive step.

What to expect

The first appointment is usually an intake assessment with parents alone, to gather your child's developmental history. After that, sessions are with your child alone, or together with you if your child is young. Younger children work in the play therapy room; teenagers usually have individual sessions, typically weekly, and parents take part through separate conversations about what helps at home. For a psychoeducational assessment, there is a parent consultation first, then several hours of testing over one or more sessions, then a written report within 14 business days. A shorter 30-minute consultation is available (540 AED). Appointments are required.
