The activity

Swimming, explained

Swimming lessons help children feel safe and confident in the water, then build the core skills step by step: putting their face in, breathing out, floating, kicking and gliding, before moving on to front crawl, backstroke and breaststroke. Good lessons also cover water safety, such as getting back to the side and staying calm after a slip under. Private one-to-one lessons give the teacher close attention on a single swimmer, which can help a nervous beginner settle or a stronger swimmer tidy up technique. Toddler lessons are usually gentle water play and confidence building rather than formal strokes. Starting ages and formats vary between teachers, so ask before you book.

Who it's for

Children from toddler age (1 year and up) through to adults, taught one swimmer at a time. The provider offers programmes for beginner, intermediate and advanced swimmers, so it can suit a toddler meeting the water for the first time as well as an older child working on technique. Lessons are in your own residential pool; the provider's post names Business Bay, so ask whether the coach travels to your area.

What to expect

Lessons are one-to-one in your own residential pool, so your child has the coach's full attention for the whole session. The provider says training is personalised to each swimmer's goals and aims to build confidence, technique, water skills and overall swimming ability, and that session timings are flexible. Lesson length, prices, whether a trial lesson is offered and what to bring are not published, so ask about these when you get in touch. It is also worth asking whether a parent should stay poolside for younger children and checking your building's rules on visiting coaches before the first session.
