The activity

Dance, explained

Kids' dance classes usually begin with baby ballet, where the youngest dancers learn to move to music, follow simple instructions and take their first positions. As children grow, classes branch into styles such as ballet for posture and technique, urban dance built around hip-hop, and contemporary-based classes that mix expression with strength and flexibility. Along the way children build coordination, balance, rhythm, focus and the confidence to perform in front of others. Most studios group children by age, and many start them from around three years old.

Who it's for

Children from 3 to 14 in age-specific groups: Baby Ballet 3-4 years, Ballet 5-8, Modern Fusion 5-7 and 8-11, Urban Dance 5-8 (listed as 5-7 on the home page), 8-10 and 11-14. Teens from 13 can join the mixed-age teen and adult Ballet group; Contemporary, Stretching and Salsa & Bachata (ladies only) are 15+.
