About Peter Cowen Academy at Emirates Golf Club
The Peter Cowen Academy is Emirates Golf Club's golf academy, run by PGA Professionals. The Junior Development Programme is a 16-week group term with five levels, from Discover Golf for 4 to 6 year olds up to Golf Elites for 10 to 17 year olds with a handicap of 18.0 or below. Sessions run on weekday afternoons and evenings and on weekend mornings and afternoons, and the academy says over 225 junior golfers take part each week, with regular competitions and a Par 3 and Faldo tournament schedule. Alongside the group terms, the Junior Academy offers 45-minute private or shared lessons for anyone under 18. Each term includes 16 weeks of driving range access (unlimited balls 7am-4pm, 100 balls a day after 4pm) and weekday Par 3 access, clubs on loan for lessons and range practice, a Junior T-shirt, a passbook and certificates. Term 1 of 2026-27 runs from the week of 14 September 2026 to 14 February 2027 and Term 2 starts the week of 22 February 2027; ask about joining mid-term.
The activity
Golf, explained
Junior golf starts with the basics: how to hold the club, stand to the ball and make a balanced swing, then moves on to chipping, putting and hitting from the range. As children improve they play short holes, learn the rules and etiquette, and eventually take on full courses and handicap competitions. Golf builds coordination, patience and focus, and it rewards steady practice more than size or strength, so younger and smaller children can hold their own. Many junior programmes take children from around 4, starting with fun, game-based sessions and short lessons of under an hour, with clubs lent out so families do not need to buy a set straight away.
Who it's for
Juniors aged 4 to 17. Group levels: Discover Golf (ages 4-6), Swing Structure (6-9), Golf Mechanics (9-12), Golf Performance (12-16) and Golf Elites (10-17, handicap 18.0 and below or equivalent ability). Private and shared lessons are open to all juniors under 18, beginners or experienced. Boys and girls; nothing published on special needs, so ask the academy.
What to expect
Group sessions last 45 minutes for Discover Golf, 50 minutes for Swing Structure and Golf Mechanics, and 80 minutes for Golf Performance and Golf Elites. The youngest level is built around fun, basic athletic skills and confidence in a social group. Clubs are lent free of charge for lessons and range practice; for play on the course, bring your own or rent from the reception. Each junior gets a passbook with colour levels to work through, and an award at each level. Missed group sessions cannot be made up at another time. No free trial is published, so ask the academy about trying a session first.
