Optimal Dance Academy is the dance school run from the Optimal Fitness building in Dubai Studio City, with separate weekly timetables in Townsquare and Remraam. For children, the main strand is classical ballet on the Royal Academy of Dance (RAD) syllabus: the Studio City timetable runs from Pre-Primary through Grades 1 to 8 and on to Advanced Foundation, Advanced 1 and Advanced 2. Alongside ballet there are Junior and Senior Contemporary classes, and a Dance Fusion class mixing hip-hop and contemporary. The academy also lists a Musical Theatre course for kids. Instructors include manager Carmen Lowson, who is RAD RTS-qualified with over 15 years of teaching in the UAE, and the school says all teachers hold police clearance and safeguarding training. Classes suit beginners as well as experienced dancers, students perform in an annual show, and fees are paid by the term.

The activity

Dance, explained

Dance classes build rhythm, flexibility, coordination and confidence through structured movement, whether that's the discipline of classical ballet, the freedom of contemporary, or the energy of hip-hop-influenced fusion styles. Graded ballet programmes such as the Royal Academy of Dance (RAD) syllabus move children through set levels over several years, often with optional exams along the way, while contemporary and fusion classes put more weight on creative expression and choreography. Many schools start the youngest children with simple movement play and music before introducing proper technique, so a first class is usually gentle and fun rather than demanding.

Who it's for

Toddlers to adults, with separate classes for children, teens and adults; no previous dance experience is needed. At Studio City the youngest ballet class on the timetable is Pre-Primary, with graded classes up to Advanced 2 for experienced dancers.

What to expect

New students start with a trial lesson. The FAQ gives the price as AED 50, but the same page also mentions a free trial class, so confirm the cost when you book. Studio City classes on the timetable run from 45 minutes (Pre-Primary Ballet) to 90 minutes (Advanced 1 and 2 Ballet). For the trial, wear comfortable, flexible clothing; some classes need specific footwear such as ballet shoes, and the instructors can advise. Classes follow the school academic calendar, with breaks for holidays, and are paid by the term.
