The activity

Martial Arts, explained

Karate is a traditional martial art from Okinawa, Japan, built on basic techniques, kata (set patterns of moves), kumite (sparring), blocking, striking and footwork. Children learn balance, coordination, focus and self-defence basics, and progress is marked with coloured belts earned at gradings. Kickboxing is a higher-tempo, fitness-led style: warm-ups, punch and kick drills, pad work and conditioning. Kobudo is the Okinawan weapons art that sits alongside karate, using traditional tools such as the Bo (staff), Sai, Tonfa and Nunchaku, introduced gradually under supervision. At this club, children can usually start karate from around 4, depending on their readiness and focus.

Who it's for

Children can usually begin karate from around 4 years old, depending on their readiness and focus level. The Dubai karate page lists kids' karate classes, teen programmes, adult training, family karate sessions, private classes and beginner to advanced levels; the Dubai kickboxing and Kobudo pages also list classes for kids, teenagers and adults, with no prior experience needed. Private classes for ladies are run by a female 4th Dan instructor. Starting ages for kickboxing and Kobudo are not published - ask the provider.

What to expect

Trial classes can be booked through the club (the homepage advertises a free trial) - call the Dubai branch to arrange one. Beginners can wear comfortable workout clothing at first; a karate uniform (gi) can be bought later for regular training. The Dubai karate page says beginner classes introduce the basics gradually: basic techniques, kata, kumite (sparring), blocking and striking, footwork and balance drills. Most students train 2-3 times a week, and students move up through belt ranks at gradings. Kickboxing sessions include warm-ups, cardio conditioning, punching and kicking drills, pad work and strength training. Class lengths are not published - ask the provider.
