The activity

Maths Tutor, explained

A maths tutor works with a child one-to-one or in a small group to build confidence with numbers, from counting and times tables through fractions and algebra to calculus and statistics. Sessions follow the child's own school curriculum rather than a fixed class syllabus, so a tutor can slow down on a topic that's causing trouble or push ahead for a child who's coasting. Tutoring can start in the early primary years and carry on through GCSE, IGCSE, A-Level, IB or AP exam years, with exam technique and past-paper practice added as exams get closer. It suits a child who needs steady, personal attention rather than a full classroom.

Who it's for

Primary (ages 5-11), Middle School (11-14) and High School (14-18) students, 1-to-1 or in small groups of 2-4 (2-3 at primary level); online tutoring for all ages. The Arabic programme takes children from age 5, native and non-native speakers.

What to expect

The first step is a free 30-minute assessment of your child's level, learning style and goals, followed by a discounted trial session before you commit to a package. Lessons can be at the Al Barsha 1 centre or online. Session length and fees aren't published, so ask the provider; the centre suggests most students benefit from 2-4 hours a week per subject. If you need to miss a session, give at least 24 hours' notice to reschedule, and you can switch tutors if the match isn't right. Appointments are required.
