The activity
Music Lessons, explained
Music lessons teach a child an instrument from first principles: reading notes, keeping time and building the physical technique the instrument needs. Piano is a common first instrument because it gives an early, audible result and lays a foundation, such as reading two staves and feeling rhythm, that carries over to other instruments later. Lessons usually build from simple pieces towards small concerts or graded exams such as ABRSM as a child progresses, and regular practice between weekly sessions is what drives progress. Many children start piano around 5 to 7, though schools often teach a wide age range.
