About Mountain Extreme
Mountain Extreme is an indoor climbing gym in Al Quoz 3 with its own Climbing Academy for children. Four to six-year-olds join Little Climbers, sessions of up to 60 minutes with a maximum of four children per instructor, run by AMGA-certified Climbing Wall Instructors and built around games that develop balance, coordination and confidence. From seven to 17, the Young Climbers Program takes children from their very first climb through Beginner, Intermediate and Advanced levels, each with its own achievement awards, and progress is recorded in a Climbing Academy Logbook. There is also coaching for students taking the indoor climbing option in Edexcel GCSE PE. The gym itself has 175 top-rope routes, 197 bouldering problems and 16 auto-belay devices, plus the M.E. Café, where the gym says families and students can sit, have a coffee or do homework overlooking the walls. Parents can watch sessions from a viewing area upstairs, and both children's programmes offer a trial class at the standard drop-in rate before you commit.
The activity
Rock Climbing, explained
Indoor climbing means moving up walls fitted with coloured holds, either roped (top-rope or auto-belay, where a rope or device catches a fall) or bouldering on lower walls over thick padded floors. Children learn to read a route like a puzzle, place their hands and feet, trust their equipment and come down safely. It builds grip and core strength, balance, coordination and a good deal of confidence, and shy or less sporty children often do well because each climber goes at their own pace. Many Dubai walls start children at around four with short, game-based sessions, then move older children onto ropes, technique and safety skills as they grow.
Who it's for
Children from age 4. Little Climbers is for ages 4-6; the Young Climbers Program is for ages 7-17, from complete beginners to advanced climbers. Climbers must weigh between 20 kg and 130 kg. Outside classes, children aged 4-6 must climb with a Mountain Extreme instructor, 7-13-year-olds under the direct supervision of a paying adult, and from 14 young people can climb independently once assessed by an instructor, with a parent-signed risk form. GCSE PE students can train for the indoor climbing assessment.
What to expect
A first visit brings a facility tour, a safety briefing and help choosing the right climbing for your child's age and ability. Little Climbers sessions last up to 60 minutes in groups of no more than four children per instructor. Both children's programmes offer a trial class at the standard drop-in rate; the site's non-member price is the All Day pass at AED 125 plus VAT, with 30% off a first visit, so confirm the trial price with the gym. Young Climbers must bring their own climbing shoes and a Petzl harness. Wear comfortable sportswear; chalk powder is not allowed. Book in advance through the online portal or the Glofox app, at least two hours before class.
