About Boulder Zone

Boulder Zone is an indoor bouldering gym in a warehouse in Al Quoz 1: climbing without ropes on walls 4.5 metres high, with crash mats below. The gym has more than 260 square metres of wall and over 100 problems for every level, plus a 2024 Moon Board and a 32-metre competition wall. Children are welcome: climbers aged 8 and up may boulder on their own, and under-8s must be supervised by a parent or guardian or a dedicated coach. The gym's terms also say children under 12 must be supervised by an adult at all times, so plan to stay with a younger child. There is a youth day pass for under-12s at AED 70, and the 90-day and 180-day Duo+ passes cover two adults and two children under 12, which suits families who want to climb together. Private coaching is AED 300 an hour, and families can contact the gym to ask about a kids' party.

The activity

Rock Climbing, explained

Bouldering is climbing without ropes or harnesses on short walls, with thick crash mats underneath to land on. Each climb, called a problem, is a set of coloured holds that runs from very easy to very hard, so a child can start on the first grades and move up as they get stronger. Kids spend as much time working out how to do a climb as actually climbing it, which builds grip and core strength, balance, coordination, problem-solving and the confidence to try again after a fall. Special climbing shoes give grip on small holds. Many children start around the time they can follow simple safety rules, usually with a parent or coach close by.

Who it's for

Children and families. The site says climbers aged 8+ may boulder independently and under-8s must be supervised by a parent/guardian or a dedicated coach; its terms of service say children under 12 must be supervised by an adult at all times in the gym. Youth walk-in pricing is for climbers below the age of 12. The homepage mentions Kids Bouldering Courses, and a Youth Squad programme is listed as coming soon; ask the provider what runs for children now. Weekend mornings from 8AM to 10:30AM are ladies only.

What to expect

Every climber, whatever their experience, does a safety briefing before their first climb. Climbing shoes are compulsory (no barefoot climbing) and socks are required; rental shoes are AED 25 and chalk AED 10 per visit, or bring your own socks or buy a pair at the gym. Wear comfortable sportswear you can move in, with nothing baggy and no dangling threads or cords. A walk-in day pass lets you climb all day, and no appointment is needed to drop in. For a child new to climbing, ask the provider about a kids' course or a private coaching session (AED 300 an hour). No free trial is published.
