About MK Fencing Academy Dubai, United Arab Emirates

MK Fencing Academy (MKFA) teaches fencing to children, teenagers and adults in its own fencing hall on the 2nd floor of Hamdan Sports Complex on Emirates Road, Dubai. It started as Dubai Fencing Club in 2002, became MKFA in 2008 and has been a member of the UAE Fencing Federation since 2005. Group and private lessons run from age 6 to adult, and junior groups are split by age, weapon and level: épée from Juniors U11 Beginners up to Juniors U15 to U20 Elite, plus U11 and U16 sabre groups. There are also senior groups for 16+ and women-only classes for ages 16 and over. The academy was founded by Dr Mihail Kouzev, who coaches alongside Maria Kouzeva, Pasquale Capuano and Szabina Matyas, and it runs camps and seminars with Olympians Giulia Rizzi, Rubén Limardo and Nikolai Novosjolov. A free 30-minute tester session runs on Tuesday evenings and Sunday mornings, all kit is provided, and a drop-in group class is 120 AED. It holds 4.8 on Google from 54 reviews.

The activity

Fencing, explained

Fencing is a sword sport fought with one of three weapons - foil, épée or sabre - each with slightly different target areas and scoring rules. Kids learn footwork, blade work, timing and tactics inside protective gear (mask, jacket, glove), building quick decision-making, discipline and coordination rather than raw strength. Beginners usually start with footwork and basic attacks/parries before sparring ('bouting') under supervision, and can progress into competitive club or national squads as they improve. It's a sport that suits both very energetic children and quieter, tactical thinkers, and most academies can take complete beginners with no prior experience.

Who it's for

Ages 6 to adult, from first-timers to competitors. Junior groups on the 2026-27 timetable: Juniors U11 Épée - Beginners, Juniors U12 to U16 Épée - Intermediate, Juniors U15 to U20 Épée - Elite, Junior U11 Sabre, Junior U16 Sabre and UAE National Juniors. Adults and older teens join Seniors Beginner Épée Fencing or Seniors Open Épée Fencing (16+), and there are women-only classes for ages 16 and over. Not sure which group fits? The team will suggest one.

What to expect

The easiest start is the Free Tester session, a 30-minute 'try fencing' slot on Tuesdays 6:30-7PM and Sundays 9-9:30AM, booked through the academy's online booking page. Regular group classes last 60 minutes. All fencing kit is provided and beginners don't need to buy anything for their first three months. For the first class, bring a comfortable T-shirt (an MKFA T-shirt is given on registration), long black tracksuit trousers, indoor sports shoes with non-marking soles and a bottle of water. Everyone must complete a safety waiver before their first class, and a 200 AED charge applies to damaged academy equipment.
