About Matrix Martial Arts

Matrix Martial Arts is a karate club on Sheikh Zayed Road in Al Quoz 1 that describes itself as Australian and family-operated, and says it is affiliated with the UAE, Australian and NSW karate federations. Children train in three age groups: Little Dragons (3-5 years), Little Legends (6-9 years) and Big Legends (9-14 years), with a Cadets & Adults class from 15. Little Dragons focuses on balance, listening and self-control; Little Legends adds karate fundamentals, kata, sparring and anti-bullying skills; Big Legends moves on to advanced kata, competitive sparring and weapons basics. Kids' classes run from 4PM Monday to Thursday and from 10AM on Saturday and Sunday, one hour per class. The chief instructor, Sensei Shaikh Dilawar, is listed as a 5th Dan black belt, and Sensei Shaikh Snehal, a 4th Dan, specialises in children's and women's classes. Fees are not published, and a trial class is booked on WhatsApp. The club is rated 5.0 on Google from 46 reviews.

The activity

Martial Arts, explained

Karate is a Japanese martial art built on punches, kicks, blocks and kata - set sequences of moves practised until they are sharp and controlled. Children learn to stand, move and strike with balance, then pair up for kumite (controlled sparring) as they get older. Alongside fitness and coordination, karate classes lean heavily on etiquette: bowing, listening to the instructor and waiting your turn, which is why many parents choose it for focus and confidence. Progress is marked by coloured belts, so children can see themselves improve. Many clubs take children from around three or four, starting with play-based drills before formal technique.

Who it's for

Children aged 3 to 14 in three groups: Little Dragons (3-5 years, no prior experience needed), Little Legends (6-9 years on the programme page; the timetable lists it as 6 to 8 years) and Big Legends (9-14 years). Teens from 15 join Cadets & Adults. There is also a women-only class led by female instructors and private training for all ages and levels.

What to expect

Classes last one hour. The club suggests 2-3 sessions a week for Little Dragons, three a week for Little Legends and 3-4 for Big Legends. Progress is graded: Little Dragons start at white belt with dojo rules, then earn stripes for stance and punch, listening and focus, and balance and coordination before a Little Dragon graduation. Older groups move on to kata, sparring basics and self-defence, and Big Legends adds weapons basics. A trial class can be requested through the website's 'Book Trial' WhatsApp button. Ask the provider about the trial fee, what to wear and whether a uniform is needed.
