The activity

Swimming, explained

Swimming lessons build water confidence first, then technique. Beginners usually start with getting comfortable in the water, breath control, floating and kicking, then move on to strokes such as freestyle and backstroke as their confidence grows. Along the way children learn water safety, which matters in a city with so many pools and beaches. Many families start from around three or four years old, though some teachers take younger children with a parent nearby. Progress is gradual, and steady practice each week makes the biggest difference.
