Damac Marina

Karate1combat is a kids' karate and self-defence programme in Dubai run by martial arts trainer Amer Msaroua, who posts on Instagram as @karate_combat_kids. His Instagram bio describes self-defence and leadership training for children from age 3, with classes in Sports City and Marina among other areas. His own web page (which uses the name Sport Master Academy) sets out three strands: self-defence, the art of board breaking with hands and feet, and competitions and events where kids test their skills. The coach's stated focus is confidence - the page says "a child who is confident in their abilities is a well-rounded child". There is no single published venue, so ask which location suits you before booking. On Google, the business is listed as a martial arts school with a Sports City / JVC address and holds 4.9 from 14 reviews.

The activity

Martial Arts, explained

Karate is a striking martial art built around punches, kicks, blocks and forms (kata), practised in a uniform with belt gradings marking progress. Self-defence-focused kids' karate classes tend to add situational drills - what to do if grabbed, how to get away, when to shout for help - alongside the usual technique and fitness work. Classes build coordination, discipline and confidence as much as fighting skill, and most clubs will take children from as young as 3-4 with age-split groups as kids get older.

Who it's for

Children from age 3, according to the provider's Instagram bio. Current age groups, levels, and whether boys and girls train together are not published - ask the provider.

What to expect

The coach's web page describes three parts to the programme: self-defence, to give children defensive skills and confidence; board breaking, where kids learn to break boards with their hands and feet; and competitions and events, where they test their skills and decision-making. What a first session looks like, whether there is a trial class, what kit to bring and which venue your child would train at are not published - message the coach on WhatsApp to ask before you go.
