About Kalaranjani Centre for Performing Arts
Kalaranjani is a Dubai training centre for Indian performing arts, with teachers in Hindustani vocal music, tabla, harmonium, Kathak and Bharatanatyam. The centre follows the guru-shishya tradition, where a student learns closely from one teacher, and it takes learners of any age. Its site names the teacher for each art: Hindustani vocalists Subhajit Guhathakurta and Sumedha Dey, Kathak teacher Sameeksha Joshi, Bharatanatyam teacher Deepashree Gadgil and tabla player Sandeepan Chemmangattuvalappil. Classes are listed at Jebel Ali and Oud Metha, with live online classes too. Kalaranjani also runs music programmes in some Dubai schools, including Amity School Dubai and Global Indian International School. Students get stage time: the centre lists performances at the India pavilion opening gala at Expo Dubai, the Hindu Temple Dubai and the Consulate General of India. It also runs UAE Super Kalakar, an inter-school Indian classical music and dance competition. Terms run January to March, April to June and September to December.
The activity
Indian Classical Music, explained
Indian classical music has two main traditions, and Hindustani music is the one from the north of the subcontinent. Children learn to sing or play within a raga (a melodic framework) and a taal (a rhythmic cycle), starting with scales, simple compositions and steady practice, called riyaz. Many learn alongside an instrument such as the tabla, a pair of hand drums, or the harmonium, a small keyboard pumped by hand. It builds listening, memory, pitch and patience, and it gives children a living link to South Asian culture. Lessons are traditionally taught teacher to student in the guru-shishya way; Kalaranjani does not publish a starting age, so ask when you book a demo.
Who it's for
Children, teenagers and adults. The centre says it teaches enthusiasts "irrespective of age", and its online registration form (2023) lists Kids 1, Kids 2, Teenagers, Adults 1 and Adults 2 classes. Course pages say beginners and experienced students are both welcome. Exact ages for each class are not published: ask the provider.
What to expect
You can book a demo class through the form on the website, choosing Indian vocal music, Bharatanatyam, Kathak or tabla and giving your child's age; whether the demo is free is not published, so ask the provider. Under the centre's terms (last updated April 2024) each class lasts one hour, and a term has 12 classes (January-March and April-June) or 16 classes (September-December). Missed classes get up to two make-up classes within the term, and students can join online on a day they can't come in. Term fees are paid by bank transfer before the third class. Kit and what to wear: ask the provider.
