James & Alex Dance Studios is a dance school in Dubai Media City that has been running since 2012, with 3 studios in a 4,000 sq ft venue in Concord Tower. Alongside a large adult timetable, it runs a children's programme of ballet, hip hop and contemporary. Ballet is where the youngest start: Baby Ballet is a 30-minute class for 2-3 year olds, and Kids Ballet is for 4-6 year olds. Kids HipHop starts from around age 6 and Kids Contemporary is for older children, so a child who wants something more energetic than ballet has somewhere to go next. Classes run weekly through a term, and the studio offers demo classes for newcomers. The studio is open every day, 10AM-10PM, and is rated 4.8 on Google from 317 reviews. The timetable changes each term, so message or call the studio for the current one before you go.

The activity

Dance, explained

Dance classes teach children rhythm, coordination, musicality and confidence while they learn steps and routines in a group. Ballet builds posture, balance and discipline through structured technique, and many schools start it with toddlers. Hip hop is freer and more energetic, set to current music, while contemporary mixes elements of ballet, jazz and modern dance with more room for expression and improvisation. Children usually join a weekly class for their age band, build up over a term and often work towards a routine they can show family at the end. Most start with a demo or trial class to see whether the style suits them.

Who it's for

Children from age 2: Baby Ballet (2-3 years) and Kids Ballet (4-6 years), then Kids HipHop from around 6 and Kids Contemporary for older children (8+ on its class page). Age bands can change by term, so confirm the current ones with the studio. The studio also teaches adults.

What to expect

Classes are weekly and grouped by age, starting with a 30-minute Baby Ballet session for 2-3 year olds. The studio offers demo classes for kids' ballet, including Baby Ballet and Ballet (4-6 yrs); call or WhatsApp to request one. For ballet, children wear a leotard, tights and ballet shoes. Classes are sold per class or as term packages that expire after a set period; the kids' page says packages are non-refundable, with make-up classes for illness. For hip hop and contemporary, and for the current term's timetable and fees, ask the provider.
