The activity

Chess, explained

Chess teaches kids to plan ahead, weigh options and live with the consequences of a decision - all on an 8x8 board with no luck involved. Lessons usually start with how each piece moves and simple tactics, then move on to openings, endgames and, for keener players, tournament play. It builds concentration, memory and patience, and suits children who enjoy quiet, focused thinking as much as those who love a competition. Many children start from around five or six, and there is no upper age limit - junior tournaments often run separate sections by age, such as Under 12 and Under 16.

Who it's for

Children and adults from complete beginners ("Chess for Beginners") to competitive players ("Chess for FIDE Rated Students"). The club's kids' weekend and winter camps are described as programmes where children play, meet peers and learn new strategies. It does not publish a minimum age - ask the provider.

What to expect

New players can start with the free one-hour "Master Chess Piece Movement" lesson, which runs every Monday, covers how the pieces move and ends with a certificate of achievement; the time and venue of that lesson aren't published, so message the club first. For a trial, the "Book a trial class" button opens a Google Calendar page titled "Book a Class (Private Class Only)". The club's winter kids' camp ran 9AM-3PM at its Burjuman office. Prices, kit and what a first paid lesson involves aren't published - ask the provider.
