The activity
Chess, explained
Chess teaches kids to plan ahead, spot patterns and stay calm under pressure. A typical session starts with a short lesson on a tactic or opening idea, then moves into supervised games where kids practise what they have just learned against a partner of a similar level. Many academies take complete beginners from around age 5 or 6, teaching how the pieces move and the basic rules first, before tactics, openings and tournament play for older or stronger players. It is a quiet activity that travels well, since a board and a willing opponent are all it needs, and many kids who stick with it go on to play in school or club tournaments.
