The activity

Dance, explained

Kathak is a classical dance from north India built on storytelling. Dancers wear ankle bells (ghungroo) and combine fast, rhythmic footwork with spins (chakkars), graceful hand gestures and facial expression to tell stories set to music and tabla. Children start with basic footwork, counting rhythm and simple pieces, then move on to longer compositions as their stamina and memory grow. It builds coordination, posture, focus and a strong sense of rhythm, and it is a way into Indian music and culture. Many schools follow a graded syllabus with exams and hold an annual show. Ask the school which age its youngest group starts at.

Who it's for

Children and adults learning Kathak, from beginners to students polishing their skills. The Summer Workshop 2026 was open to all ages and all levels, with fun choreographies for kids and a ladies' beginners special, and the studio's March 2026 hybrid sessions show children in class. Ask the studio which age its youngest regular class starts at.

What to expect

Everything centres on Kathak. The Summer Workshop 2026 covered Tarana, Thumri and Ghazal pieces, semi-classical and contemporary Kathak, Sufi Kathak and yoga dance and ISTD syllabus enhancement, with fun choreographies for kids and one-on-one personal sessions. Sessions can be hybrid, with some students in the studio and others joining online, as the studio's March 2026 post shows. The school's annual day, Dancing Divas, was held at GEMS Modern Academy on 2 November 2025, by invitation. Ask the studio what a first class involves, what to wear, whether a trial class is available and which days your child's group meets.
