About Gulf Photo Plus

Gulf Photo Plus is a photography centre in Warehouse D36 at Alserkal Avenue, Al Quoz. It runs a film and camera shop, a film lab, a printing and framing studio and a programme of photography workshops. Most of its classes are for adults, but it also runs a Kids Smartphone Photography Session for children aged 8 to 14. It is a two-hour, hands-on class covering the phone's camera controls, creative composition, visual storytelling and portraits. Children bring their own charged smartphone (any brand), and no experience is needed. Groups are capped at 10, and the kids' sessions are led by instructor Laura Huntley, who the centre says has more than 16 years of photography experience and 13 years of teaching at GPP. The group session costs AED 399. At the time of writing no group dates were on the calendar, so parents can sign up for an email when new dates open or book a private class (ages 8 and up) at AED 500 an hour with a 2-hour minimum. The centre says it was founded in 2007.

The activity

Photography, explained

Photography classes for children teach them to look before they press the button. Kids learn how their camera works (on a phone, the focus, exposure and zoom controls), then practise composition: where to place the subject, how to use light and shadow, and how a sequence of pictures can tell a story. Sessions are usually hands-on, with short demonstrations followed by shooting around the venue and a look back at the results together. It builds patience, attention to detail and confidence in explaining an idea. Smartphone photography is an easy start from around eight, because most children already know how to handle a phone and there is no extra kit to buy.

Who it's for

The Kids Smartphone Photography Session is for children aged 8 to 14, beginners welcome, no prior experience needed. Aged 15 or over? The centre points teens to its regular Smartphone Photography class. Private classes take children from age 8; the kids page suggests families with younger children ask about a private class, so check with the centre before booking for an under-8. Private classes cost AED 500 an hour for one child with a 2-hour minimum (smallest booking AED 1,000); each extra child sharing the session costs more per person, quoted on request. Group workshops are taught in English; Arabic-language private classes are available on request.

What to expect

The kids' group session lasts two hours at the Alserkal Avenue studio, in a group of up to 10. Children learn the essential phone camera controls, composition, visual storytelling and how to take eye-catching portraits, with plenty of hands-on shooting. They need their own smartphone, fully charged (phones are not provided), and a snack. The instructor photographs and films during class; tell them if your child should not appear in published material. The group session is a drop-off, with pickup at the listed end time; for a private class, parents are welcome to sit in. There is no trial session published; ask the provider.
