About Gracie Barra Dubai - Nadd Al Hamar

Gracie Barra Nadd Al Hamar is a Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu academy with a full kids' ladder: Little Champions 1 for ages 3-5, Little Champions 2 for ages 6-10 and Juniors for 11-15, plus an MMA Kids class on its Muay Thai & MMA programme. Adults, women-only and advanced Jiu-Jitsu classes run on the same timetable, so parents can train too. The academy is part of the Gracie Barra network, which it says gives students access to more than 1,000 schools worldwide, and every class is led by certified Gracie Barra instructors following what the academy calls a structured curriculum for consistent progress, safety and fun. It describes its approach as holistic, covering both physical and mental well-being. On the practical side, the academy lists premium training mats, changing areas and a viewing lounge for families. The youngest two groups have dedicated beginners-and-trials sessions each week, which makes a first visit easy to plan. Prices aren't published, so message the academy for fees.

The activity

Jiu-Jitsu, explained

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) is a grappling martial art built on control, leverage and technique rather than punches or kicks, which is why many parents choose it as a first martial art: a smaller child can learn to manage a bigger partner through position rather than strength. Kids' classes usually start with games and movement drills that build coordination, balance and body awareness, then add escapes, holds and controlled partner practice. Along the way children learn to listen, wait their turn and keep going when something is hard. Progress is marked with stripes and coloured belts, and many clubs take children from about age three or four.

Who it's for

Children aged 3-15 in three groups on the academy's timetable: Little Champions 1 (3-5 years), Little Champions 2 (6-10 years, with a separate advanced class) and Juniors (11-15 years). There is also an MMA Kids class; its age range isn't published, so ask the academy. Adults, women and advanced students have their own classes.

What to expect

New children start in a 'Beginners & Trials' class: Little Champions 1 (3-5) on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 4pm, and Little Champions 2 (6-10) on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays at 4:30pm. The academy's blog says beginners can wear comfortable sportswear such as shorts and a t-shirt for the first class, that staff give new families a tour and explain the curriculum, and suggests arriving a few minutes early to finish registration. Its beginners' guide describes the introductory session as complimentary; confirm this when you book through the online calendar. Kids' belts run through grey, yellow, orange and green, with more frequent stripes than adults.
