About Delariva Jiu Jitsu Nad Al Sheba

Delariva Jiu Jitsu Nad Al Sheba is the Dubai academy of De La Riva UAE, which teaches the De La Riva Method created by Master Ricardo de la Riva. The Dubai academy is on Ras Al Khor Road; the group's other two UAE academies are in Al Reem and Al Raha in Abu Dhabi. Children train in four age groups - Kids 1 (3-5), Kids 2 (6-8), Kids 3 (9-12) and Juniors (13-15) - with kids' Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu after school Monday to Friday and on Saturday mornings, and kids' Muay Thai on a second mat Monday to Thursday. Some kids' classes are marked beginner, others all levels, so a new starter has a clear slot. Your child's first Jiu-Jitsu or Muay Thai class is a free trial, booked online, and kids' Jiu-Jitsu is from AED 899 a month and kids' Muay Thai from AED 699. On Google the academy has 5.0 from 30 reviews.

The activity

Jiu-Jitsu, explained

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) is a grappling martial art: instead of punches and kicks, children learn to control a partner through position, leverage and technique on padded mats. Classes mix warm-ups, falls and escapes, guard positions and controlled partner drills, and progress is marked through coloured belts. It builds strength, flexibility, focus and the confidence of being able to stay calm under pressure. "Gi" classes are done in a kimono; "No-Gi" classes in a rash guard and shorts. At this academy the youngest group, Kids 1, is for ages 3-5, with separate groups up to age 15.

Who it's for

Children aged 3-15 in four groups: Kids 1 (ages 3-5), Kids 2 (6-8), Kids 3 (9-12) and Juniors (13-15); adults are 16+. Kids 1 and 2 train together, as do Kids 3 and Juniors. Monday and Wednesday kids' Jiu-Jitsu classes are for beginners; Tuesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday classes are for all levels. The same age groups apply to kids' Muay Thai.

What to expect

Start with a free trial class: the Dubai academy's online sign-up lists a free trial for Jiu-Jitsu (kids can come in any colour belt) and a separate free Muay Thai trial. For a beginner, Monday or Wednesday is a good first pick - Kids 1 and 2 (ages 3-8) train at 4:30PM and Kids 3 and Juniors (ages 9-15) at 5:30PM. Gi classes need a kimono; Friday's classes are No-Gi, done in a rash guard and pocketless shorts. Muay Thai needs shin guards and gloves. Ask the provider whether kit can be borrowed for a trial.
