About Engineers To Be (ETB)

Engineers To Be, known as ETB, is a Dubai education company that has run STEM, digital technology, sports and enrichment programmes in UAE schools since 2013. Most of its classes are after-school clubs held inside partner schools, so they are open only to pupils of that school. Children from any school can join ETB's academies, which run on weekends and some weekday evenings at Kings' School Al Barsha and Kings' School Dubai: engineering (including a web development class for ages 10+) and karate for ages 5+. The STEM side covers engineering workshops led by engineers, coding and robotics with Arduino microcontrollers, science workshops, STEM Challenges for younger pupils, The World of AI and video game design. There are sports classes too: karate, gymnastics, ballet and athletics. Children are grouped by age and experience. Each term brings a new project, and children take their finished project home at the end of it. Parents get updates and photos through a WhatsApp group for each class. ETB also runs holiday camps for ages 3-15. Its office is in Meydan; classes run at schools.

The activity

Robotics, explained

Kids' robotics mixes building and coding. Children put together a small machine, such as a wheeled car or a walking robot, then write simple code that tells it how to move, sense and react. When something does not work they test, tweak and try again, which builds problem-solving, patience and teamwork alongside the maths and science behind it. Younger children usually start with hands-on building challenges and picture-based coding, then move on to microcontroller boards such as Arduino and text-based code as they get older.

Who it's for

School-age children. After-school clubs are only for pupils of the partner schools where ETB runs them, and are banded by school year: at Kings' School Dubai, for example, Coding & Robotics is for Years 2-6 and The World of AI for Years 3-6, with other clubs open to all year groups from FS2 to Year 6. The academies are open to children from any school: Karate Academy is for ages 5+ at all levels, and the Web Development academy starts at age 10 (children bring their own laptop). Holiday camps are for ages 3-15, grouped by age.

What to expect

After-school clubs run inside the school: ETB collects the children at the end of the school day, so you pick them up once the class ends. Academy classes last an hour, once a week for a term. Each term has a new project with new learning goals that build on the last one, and children take their own project home at the end of term. Engineering workshops are project-based and do not use pre-made kits. Kits for engineering and science are optional, though ETB recommends them; a karate uniform is compulsory. Each class has a WhatsApp group where progress and photos are shared. Trial sessions are not mentioned on the site: ask the provider.
