About Dubai Ice Rink
Dubai Ice Rink is the Olympic-sized rink on the ground floor of Dubai Mall, between the Waterfall Atrium and The Souk. Every public session lasts 90 minutes, and the ticket includes skates (EU25 to EU52), socks and a locker. Sessions start at 10am every day; on Fridays to Sundays the afternoon and evening slots become DJ Nights with live DJs. Children must be at least 100cm tall to skate in public sessions, and under 120cm they skate with an adult. Penguin, seal and snowman skating aids and helmets can be added for nervous first-timers. For children who want to learn properly, the rink runs six-week academy blocks of 45-minute group classes on fixed days: Tots Skating Academy for ages 3-6, Kids Skating Academy for ages 6-17 and a Hockey Academy for ages 6-18. Private lessons, birthday parties and day passes are also on offer.
The activity
Ice Skating, explained
Ice skating starts with learning to stand, march and glide on two feet, then how to stop and how to get up safely after a fall. Once those feel natural, children move on to one-foot glides, skating backwards, crossovers and simple spins, and some go on to figure skating or ice hockey. It builds balance, leg strength, coordination and plenty of resilience, because every skater falls and gets back up. Many beginners push a skating aid at first, and helmets and gloves are sensible for young children. Lessons usually come in short blocks of weekly group classes, and each rink sets its own starting age and height rules.
Who it's for
Public skating is open to all levels, from first-timers to freestylers. Children under 100cm cannot skate in public sessions; children from 100cm to under 120cm must be accompanied by an adult, and from 120cm they can skate alone. Skating aids are available for children and adults. Tots Skating Academy is for ages 3-6; Kids Skating Academy is for ages 6-17, placed in levels F1-F7 by ability; the Hockey Academy is for ages 6-18, in beginner and amateur groups. Private and semi-private lessons suit any level, and there is an Adult Academy too. People of determination get a discount on admission: ask the rink for details.
What to expect
Book a 90-minute session online, then collect skates and socks and use a locker at the rink. Dress for winter: the ice averages -5°C, so cover arms and legs. Long dresses, national dress and trailing clothing are not allowed, and the on-ice rules also say no scarves or long coats. Gloves help (AED 10 at the rink if you forget). Marshals help fasten skates and pick the right skating aid, and helmets are advised for children. Everyone skates anticlockwise, with no phones, food or bags on the ice. One spectator per group watches free. Medics and a first-aid room are on site.
