The activity

Roller Skating, explained

Roller skating classes teach kids balance, coordination and confidence on skates, usually starting with basic stance, stopping and gliding before moving into turns, footwork and, for more advanced skaters, figure or speed skating disciplines. Beginner programmes often run as small groups so a coach can spot individual technique issues, with kit like skates and protective pads either provided or required to bring. Most academies start children from around age 4, since that's when balance and confidence on wheels typically develop enough for structured coaching, with more competitive tracks opening up as skaters progress.

Who it's for

Junior Stars is for beginners aged 4-6; the Elite Squad is for advanced skaters; private training is open to all levels; and there's a separate Adult Fitness & Fun programme for grown-ups

What to expect

New skaters can book a free trial class through the academy's WhatsApp before signing up. The site asks skaters to come in comfortable clothing with a properly fitted pair of roller skates, and says protective gear such as a helmet and knee pads is highly encouraged; the academy also sells skates, helmets and protective gear through its online shop. Class length, group sizes and whether skates can be borrowed for a trial aren't published, so ask the provider when you book, and confirm which of the eight rinks your child's session is at.
