Dubai Hurricanes: mini and youth rugby and netball at The Sevens
About Dubai Hurricanes
Dubai Hurricanes is a volunteer-run community sports club based at The Sevens Stadium on Al Ain Road. It began as a senior rugby side in 1999 and has since added netball (2016), cricket (2021) and basketball, and it describes itself as a family away from home for more than 1,300 members. For children, the main offer is Mini & Youth rugby, open to all abilities from U4 to U18. The youngest play non-contact tag rugby, contact is introduced from U9, and girls who prefer not to tackle have their own Quick Rip squads. Rugby training is on Saturday mornings, with a Tuesday evening session from U9 (confirm times for 2026/27). Netball runs from U6 to U18 on Saturdays and Wednesdays at The Sevens for the 2026/27 season, and there is junior basketball at JESS Arabian Ranches. Membership includes a season kit, and new players can book a free taster session before signing up.
The activity
Rugby, explained
Rugby is a running, passing team game played with an oval ball that can only be passed backwards. Young children start with tag rugby: each player wears a belt with tags, and pulling a tag off replaces the tackle, so there is no contact while they learn to run, dodge, pass, catch and play in a team. Contact, including tackling, scrums and rucks, comes in gradually a few years later with coaching on how to do it safely. Along the way children build speed, balance, confidence and friendships. Many clubs welcome children from about age four, and girls and boys often train side by side in the youngest groups.
Who it's for
Girls and boys of all abilities. Rugby: Mini Rugby U4-U8 (tag rugby, Quick Rip for U8s), Junior Rugby U9-U12 (mixed contact rugby from U9, plus a Quick Rip squad for girls who prefer not to play contact), Youth Rugby U13-U18 (boys U13, U14, U15-16, U18; girls U14 Quick Rip, U16 Quick Rip, U16 Contact, U18 Contact). Netball 2026/27: Minis U6-U8 and U9, Juniors U10 and U11-U12, Youth U13-U14 and U15-U18. Basketball 2026/27: U8-U10, U11-U14 and U15-U18 at JESS Arabian Ranches. There are adult sections too, including a Saturday-morning adult social netball group (Mummy Canes, 18+).
What to expect
New players start with a free taster session: the club says you come and train with the age group and meet the coaches. You book it online through the club's Join Us page. Mini rugby uses the non-contact tag format, so a first session for a four- to eight-year-old is about running, passing and catching games rather than tackling. Sessions are led by a mix of volunteer and senior coaches, with certified first aiders on hand, and the club encourages parents to get involved. Once you sign up, the rugby membership includes shirt, shorts and socks, and a ball for each player from U6. What to wear for the taster: ask the provider.
