The activity

Circus & Aerial Arts, explained

Circus arts for children mix gymnastics-style ground skills with aerial work on equipment hung from the ceiling. Children learn to climb, wrap and hang on aerial silks (long lengths of soft fabric), balance and pose in an aerial hoop or trapeze, and roll, jump and tumble on mats and trampolines. Classes usually start low to the ground over thick crash mats, with a coach spotting each move. It builds grip and core strength, flexibility, balance, coordination and body awareness, and because many tricks are learned in pairs or small groups, it also builds trust and confidence. Starting ages vary by school, so check with the provider.

Who it's for

Kids, teens and adults, in separate classes. Aerial trapeze is described as a starting point for people with no circus experience, and trampoline as suitable for all levels. Exact age bands for the kids' classes are not published: ask the provider.

What to expect

The website does not describe a first session, kit list or trial policy, so ask the provider. From the school's own description, ground acrobatics classes include warm-ups, strength exercises and flexibility training, and aerial classes work on strength, balance, coordination and flexibility on fabric, hoop, trapeze or hammock. Google lists the school as appointment-required, so message before you turn up rather than walking in.
