Al Qusais

Dolphin Sports Academy is a swimming academy founded in the UAE in 2006, and this listing is its Dubai branch in Al Qusais, which the academy's contact page places beside Al Ahly Club. It began with swimming lessons and says it now trains more than 500 athletes, with branches in Dubai and Abu Dhabi. At Al Qusais the programme runs daily from 9AM to 9PM, with training for all ages and both genders and programmes for babies from the age of one. That can suit a whole family: a toddler's first splash, a school-age child learning strokes, and lessons for a parent at the same pool. The academy's swimmers have entered competitions since 2009, and its achievements page lists first places at Emirates Swimming Cup Series meets between 2014 and 2016. Fees and class times for Al Qusais are not published online, so call 052 440 6474 to book and ask about levels, slots and prices.

The activity

Swimming, explained

Swimming lessons for young children begin with water confidence: getting the face wet, blowing bubbles, floating on the front and back and kicking with a float. Once those feel easy, children learn proper strokes, usually front crawl and backstroke first, then breaststroke, along with safety skills such as jumping in, turning round and getting back to the side. Stronger swimmers can move on to squad training and galas, where they work on technique, starts, turns and stamina. Swimming builds strength, coordination and breathing control, and it is a life skill in a city full of pools and beaches. Some pools take babies and toddlers with a parent; group lessons often suit children from about four or five.

Who it's for

All ages and both genders, from babies aged one to adults, and all levels from first-timers to swimmers refining advanced technique. Whether sessions are split by age, level or gender is not published, so ask the provider.

What to expect

The Al Qusais branch page gives the essentials: the programme runs every day from 9AM to 9PM, there are programmes for babies from one year old, and bookings are made by phone on 052 440 6474. The academy says its trainers give each swimmer personal attention and that beginners and more advanced swimmers both have a place. Lesson length, group sizes, whether a parent joins the baby sessions, what kit to bring and whether a trial lesson is offered are not published, so ask the provider when you call.
