About Diverse Performing Arts School and Entertainment
Diverse Performing Arts Center is a dance, drama, singing and musical theatre school set in its own studios in The Curve Building on Sheikh Zayed Road, Al Quoz. It was started in 2008 by husband and wife Scott and Lisa Marshall. Classes cover children from age 3 to 18 (with baby ballet from age 2), from complete beginners to young performers thinking about a stage career. The timetable is big: musical theatre (split into dance, drama and singing), Dance Fusion, RAD ballet, ISTD modern and tap, hip hop, commercial pop, jazz, lyrical, acro, group and performance drama, and private singing and drama lessons. Students can take yearly exams in recognised syllabi such as RAD ballet, ISTD and Trinity drama. The school says it stages three productions a year, so students aged 5 and over get the chance to perform in at least one show. There are also holiday camps, workshops with visiting choreographers, a children's agency and a Green Room Café on site. New students start with a free trial class.
The activity
Musical Theatre, explained
Musical theatre puts singing, acting and dancing together in one class. Children learn to sing with good technique, to play a character, to improvise and deliver lines, and to pick up choreography, then combine all three in songs and scenes from shows. It builds confidence, memory, teamwork and stage presence, and it suits both the child who loves the spotlight and the quieter one who needs a push. Many schools start children around age 3 or 4 in short, playful 'mini' classes, moving to longer weekly sessions and shows as they grow. Some students go on to take graded exams or train towards drama school.
Who it's for
Children aged 3 to 18, from complete beginners to advanced students; Twinkle Toes baby ballet and Baby Bop on the timetable are described for ages 2 to 4. Drama classes are for ages 5 to 18; Dance Fusion runs from age 3; Mini Musical Theatre on the timetable is for age 4; ISTD Modern Primary, Grade 1 and Grade 2 are listed for 6 to 8 years. Some classes are invite-only (such as performance ballet), and the semi-professional course is auditioned, for ages 14+. Camps are for ages 5 to 14.
What to expect
Your first step is a free trial class: fill in the registration form on the school's website and the admissions team gets in touch to arrange it.
