Aurora Judo Academy is a children's judo club with a Dubai department at Al Habtoor City on Al Meydan Road and a second branch in Al Bateen, Abu Dhabi. The club says it teaches children discipline, hard work, respect, self-control and self-confidence, and describes itself as "not just a judo club, but a real family". Its website splits children into three groups: a preschool level for 4-6 year olds built around coordination, muscle strength and the basics of acrobatics; an entry level for 7-9 year olds with specialised physical training and the discipline of judo; and an advanced level for 10-17 year olds with more classes each week and tournaments. Classes run in groups or one-to-one, and the club holds its own competitions. The head coach named on the site is Abdula Abdulzhalilov, a Grand Slam champion in Budapest in 2020. The first trial session is free and a second child gets 10% off. Prices and class times are not published, so ask the club.

The activity

Martial Arts, explained

Judo is a Japanese martial art built on throws, falls and holds rather than punches or kicks. Children first learn how to fall safely (breakfalls), then how to balance, grip and move a partner, practising on soft mats in a white judo suit tied with a coloured belt. Games and acrobatic warm-ups keep younger children busy, while older ones add techniques, sparring and, if they want, competitions. Along the way judo builds strength, flexibility, coordination and body awareness, and clubs put a lot of weight on bowing, respect and self-control. Many clubs start children from around four, and older beginners are welcome too, progressing through belt grades at their own pace.

Who it's for

Children aged 4 to 17, in three groups on the club's website: preschool level (4-6 years), entry level (7-9 years) and advanced level (10-17 years). The registration form asks for gender and a level from 1 to 5, and asks parents to confirm their child is physically fit. Group and individual classes are offered. Whether groups are mixed boys and girls, and support for children with additional needs, are not published: ask the provider.

What to expect

The first trial session is free. Parents sign up through the registration form on the club's website, choosing Dubai as the city and giving the child's date of birth and level. The site says coaches take each child's age, physical build and training level into account, and younger children train through fun activities that build coordination and acrobatic basics. For enrolment the club lists documents including a copy of a parent's passport, the child's birth certificate and a doctor's certificate. The club sells a judo suit, white T-shirt and bag. What to wear to the trial and class length are not published: ask the provider.
