Bharatanatyam, Mohiniyattam and Kuchipudi are classical dance styles from South India. Beginners learn adavus, the basic units of footwork and posture, along with hand gestures (mudras) and facial expression, all set to rhythm. As they progress, students put these together into short traditional pieces that tell stories through movement. Training builds posture, leg strength, stamina, coordination and concentration, and it connects children with music, mythology and culture. Many students take graded exams and perform on stage, and some go on, after years of study, to a solo debut often called an arangetram. Starting ages, class levels and exam routes vary between teachers, so ask before you join.
